He Did Say Straight Talk, Didn’t Mention Anything About Voting
I’ve heard more than one pundit mention that this presidential election will be unique because the likely nominees for both major parties come from the United States Senate. This means that not only will votes be scrutinized during the race, but that there will be pressure on the candidates to advance their programs during the campaign.
So, the first big test of this following Martes Gigante was yesterday’s vote on the stimulus package. Both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama voted for the bill. John McCain, um, well…
This has been a pattern. As I’ve written about here, he has consistently missed far more votes than his colleagues, even the ones that are running for president. Not only that, he wasn’t even off campaigning this time, he was apparenly only a few Metro stops away from the capitol. Talk is that he didn’t want to be on record given some of the controversies around the bill.
So, there it is, the first sign of how McCain would govern if he were elected.

Now it looks like Hillary pulled a McCain on Thursday when the stimulus package was officially voted on, as she wasn’t present for the 81-16 vote.

You can call him soon-to-be President McCain! Must be the dems worst nightmare?

I don’t think so, Tony.
Johnny-Mac has some serious baggage. The war.. most Americans still support getting out of Iraq. He is weak on economic issues. ANd there are a whole lot of not-so-straight talk on his little express there.
He didn’t even carry 50% of the vote in his home state primary. (he and Edwards were the only favorite sons to fail to carry a majority of their home state).

Tony is deluding himself. McCain has put himself in a box by the way he has clinched the GOP nod. To appease the Right and keep them in his camp, he will need to pick a conservative to run with him AND he will need to tone down some of his more “moderate” positions. This will turn off the independents and moderate Republicans who still buy into the “straight talk” nonsense…which is about to be exposed as a PR scam…just like “compassionate conservatism.”

I’m just happy that my people are well represented in the general. But if I have to pick, I’ll go with O’Bama!

Didn’t McCain talk to the Senate Minority leader to see if he needed to be present for the vote? I believe he was told that the vote was overwhelmingly in favor and he did not have to return.
I didn’t read what Clinton’s excuse was.

56% with one two month period back in spring of 2007 having him absent for 5 weeks straight. Not only that he has also missed each roll call vote this year.
Now one might say that he has been there for the “important votes” however that does not excuse him from missing so much work since his top two rivals on the Democratic side have missed 38.3% for Senator Obama and 24.7% for Senator Clinton according to the Washington Post.
We taxpayers are paying him to represent Arizona in the Senate, not run for president.
