Golly Gee, the Citizen Has an Opinion

So, the Tucson Citizen ran an “editorial” about today’s primary election. Under the headline “Our Opinion:” Arizonans get to vote in a primary today, and some presidential candidates have dropped out of the race. Really?

If these are now “opinions” rather than facts, I guess journalistic standards are slipping.

The closest thing to an actual opinion expressed in this article is an off hand dis of the Tucson Weekly’s Project White House. As silly as Project White House was, the least you can say is that the Weekly tried to engage itself in the primary, which the Citizen, aside from a few wire stories and blog entries, didn’t seem to be too interested in doing. Heck, there wasn’t even an article in their paper about Hillary Clinton’s Saturday rally. I’m not a fan of Clinton, but someone who could very well be the next President of the United States addressing 4500 Tucsonans would seem to be, I dunno, newsworthy.

  • Wait, there is a presidential election going on? Someone should have told me!

  • You don’t suppose that the “Citizen” didn’t give post-event coverage to the Hillary Clinton SATURDAY rally because the “Citizen” doesn’t have a SUNDAY edition, and the event was widely covered by other Tucson news outlets? Nah, it couldn’t be that simple.

  • They could have run a story on Monday, which they often do about Saturday sports events.

  • Actually we had two reporters and a photographer at the event to provide coverage on the web site on Saturday. We also sent a videographer who filmed Hillary’s speech, which is on our web site, as is a photo slide show from the event.

  • While commenting on local coverage, read the tiny disclaimer on Tuesday’s Star editorial page. It says the paper didn’t endorse any candidates Tuesday because those elections are party primaries.

    Aren’t most primaries “party primaries”?

William R. Mathews, the long-ago Star co-owner, editor and publisher, must be spinning in his grave. I doubt that other edit page editors before Lee took over the Star would support the current owners’ reasoning.
