A Challenger for Bronson?
Democratic party activist Donna Branch-Gilby made a short announcement at the Democrats of Greater Tucson luncheon today that she is going to take on Sharon Bronson in the upcoming election.
I like Branch-Gilby, and Bronson doesn’t always make me happy. However, I’m not sure how Branch-Gilby finds the money to run a strong campaign against Bronson. Also, I don’t know if dissatisfaction with the way the board tackled the election integrity issue among a segment of Democratic activists is enough to take down Bronson. Another possible obstacle for Branch-Gilby: the crowd that traditionally supports women candidates is, by all indications, solidly behind Bronson.

For people that consider themselves so sophisticated, the so-called progressives certainly have been letting Ray Carroll play them like a cheap ukulele.
I assume that this is all blowback from the election integrity issue, something which comprises a very small portion of what the Board of Supervisors does. For the most part, the Board deals with guiding how we develop as a community. Do the “progressives” have an issue with the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan? The County’s efforts to make developers pay for infrastructure? The current Board’s policy of investment in our neighborhoods? I doubt that they have thought of any of these things as they seem to consider such critical issues pedestrian and beneath them.
Sometimes, it seems that the “progessives” would prefer to have Mr. Carroll and his SAHBA agenda control the Board again as it did during the mid-nineties.

Tom,
I think you deliberately failed to mention Ms. Bronson’s connections to developers. One need only look at the $100,000+ war chest she has amassed and who the donors are to see the connection to developers. Mr. Carroll only wishes he had that much sitting in his coffers.
Ms. Bronson is going to reap what she sews. She’s been a Chuckleberry stooge for too long. Those that were in attendance at the meeting involving the election fraud issue saw her true colors as she went out of her way to protect her boy Chuck.
Now it’s time for her to pay the piper. Let the voters decide.

Tedski — You failed to mention your source for this story, which I broke on Daniel’s News & Views at 2:51pm, Jan 28.

I’m sorry about that Daniel…I should have mentioned I saw it over on your blog.

Why has Chuck Huckleberry become a punching bag to some folks? He is a knowledgable, ethical and hardworking public servant who manages this vast and growing county extremely well. The desert protection plan never would have gone anywhere without his leadership. Frankly, this area is pretty lucky to have guys like him and Mike Hein who do all the grunt work and take most of the blame when things go wrong while politicians claim the plaudits when times are good and dodge responsibility when things go awry.
If there are folks in Pima County who believe that Huckleberry is manipulating the supervisors, perhaps that means that the supervisors need to know as much as he does about the workings of county government.

Is there a reason people are wary of Bronson other than the election integrity stuff?

I am a progressive, and am personaly insulted by Tom P.’s comments above. How dare you be so blithe about a swath of committed and engaged community leaders and activists. In addition, I have been at times a democrat or an independent, but have admired Ray Carrol for years precisely for his support of the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan. I remember distinctly being at a large celebration for the Plan at the Tucson Audubon’s Mason Center about five years ago, where Ray Carrol gave a great presentation on support for protecting our desert heritage. Are you a perfect democrat or an environmentalist, or a political leader for that matter, Tom? Leave the insults for private conversations, and do try to be more sophisticated and compassionate as a politican, please.

Sorry that you were insulted “Indy.” Maybe you know how I felt when I witnessed the shabby treatment of Nancy Young Wright at the hands of so-called “progressives.”
