Richardson Out, ¿Sus Arizonenses Por Obama?

Bill Richardson is expected to leave the presidential race this morning, which I find unfortunate. I hope that his exit is early enough to put together a run for Senate in his home state.

A press release is expected to go out later this morning that will announce that many of the people on Richardon’s Arizona steering committee will be supporting Barack Obama.

  • Those looking for an alternative candidate need not fear, however, as Gravel is still in it to win it.

  • John Kerry is going to endorse Obama as well. The good thing about that is this (from AP):

“Kerry should be able to provide some organizational muscle to Obama. Since losing the 2004 race, Kerry has kept a national network of supporters intact. He has an e-mail network of 3 million supporters, according to aides. He also has traveled extensively raising millions of dollars for Democratic candidates nationwide.”

  • I highly doubt Richardson will challenge US Rep. Udall for the NM Senate seat opening.

If he halts the Prez campaign, look for Bill to go back to being full time Governor, and perhaps be re-born as a smart Dem pick for VP.

  • I agree with Daniel. Udall would not have jumped in without the go ahead from Bill. Bill called him and told him he wasn’t going to run for the Senate.

  • I suspect Edwards is angling to stay in the race until the convention, where he hopes to play a Kingmaker role, offering his backing to either Obama or Clinton, whoever offers him the VP slot on the ticket.

  • At this point, Edwards intends to stay in the race until the convention. He won South Carolina in 2004 and perhaps believes he can do it again. If he’s third in South Carolina, that should have a lot of significance for his campaign. But it seems likely that he’ll stay in through Super Tuesday at least.

If Hillary wins the nomination, I very much doubt she will pick either Obama or Edwards for the VP slot.

  • Liza,

I agree if she wins outright. If she goes into the convention with a lead on Obama, but not a majority, she may have no choice.

  • I cannot imagine Hillary sharing much power with her vice president [unlike her husband appeared to do with Al Gore]–not a wonderful job to have for 8 years. I can’t imagine John Edwards wanting the VP slot–particularly not under Hillary. Likewise for Obama.
