Where Is Bill O’Reilly When You Need Him?
I spotted this sign in front of a local community organization. Obviously, they are part of a secularist left wing conspiracy against the good people of Arizona. When will this athiestic freak show end!

You spelled it wrong; when making a baseless rant, it’s spelled “athiest.”

“I” before “E”…oops.

Three sentences is hardly a rant.

Now, why don’t the dummies on the far right threaten to boycott Hasbro while they are at it?
Remember that Charles Darrow in 1935 included a community chest card in the original Monopoly game that said, “X-Mas fund matures…. collect $100.” WHAT? Taking ‘Christmas’ out of a Monopoly game? Clearly a secret commie, maybe they should all go home and burn their Monopoly games.

In fact, here is a thought:
Didn’t they used to DEMAND that commercial enterprises quit commercializing Christmas? That was the real reason I suspect behind the term, ‘X-Mas’ to sell products.
So:

How about a mall that features a nativity display, sponsored by Visa (It’s everywhere you want to be). Joseph will be dressed in a very nice suit by Ralph Lauren (shoes by Bruno Magli). Mary will be dressed in a very sharp outfit from Pendleton (plus sizes available), with solid wood platform shoes by Steve Madden, exclusively available at Nine West. The three kings will be modeling Patagonia sportswear, with Nike tennis shoes. The infant will be modeling swaddling clothes from Baby Gap. Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh will be on loan from Bank of America. Animals will be wearing collars that read, ILoveAlpacas.com.

Imagine the tension between assimilation and self-identification that we Jews feel in the “holiday” season.

jody,
There’s no logical reason why you should feel that tension in 21st century America. Most Americans identify Christmas with gift giving and receiving. The birth of Christ is hardly an issue anymore. Just go out and buy lots of stuff and that is all you need to do to celebrate Christmas in America.
In fact, Jody, it’s a great time to buy stuff for yourself. The best sales are BEFORE Christmas, not after.

jody,
I just checked lizclaiborne.com. They were having a 40% off sale, but now they’re having a different sale. Keep checking until Christmas.

I think that Americans should acknowledge that their high debt to income ratios warrants a holiday FROM holiday (over)spending. Don’t you love the ads that call for spending $20-$50 just for “stocking stuffer” items?

Gretchen:
It’s been a long, long time since when Christmas was a day to eat another big turkey dinner, sing carols around the tree and the kids were happy when they found a Raggedy Ann doll or a rocking horse under the tree.
Now they want a lot of Chinese-made electronic junk with flashing lights and bells, and just one won’t do anymore. They want a dozen.
I’d blame TV advertisers who push this stuff on kids, knowing that junior will cajole, demand and fuss until the parents get it, but the truth is that it is the fault of the parents who buy a bigger, badder SUV than they need (or likely can afford) and a 50 inch screen and sign up for Direct TV so they can watch their football games on Saturday afternoon. You can’t blame junior for wanting some big expensive toys when junior sees mom and dad buying big expensive toys for themselves.

It’s not easy to remember much about what Christmas was like when I was a kid, but the best memories I have are not about the gifts. The worst memories I have are not about the gifts either. Of course, these realizations come decades later.
However, if you need stuff, it’s self defeating to miss the best sales of the year. When in Rome…….

Hey, jody:
HERE is a sale you can’t miss!

Liza,
It’s funny how adults always see things so much differently than kids do.
The older I get, the more I realize the truthfulness of the old saw,
“Why is youth wasted on the young?”
