The Time Has Come to Say Fair’s Fair

Peter GarrettA bit of a footnote to the Australian parliamentary elections for those of us who are Gen Xers: former Midnight Oil frontman Peter Garrett has been named Minister for Heritage, Environment and Arts by newly installed Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

Garrett has been in the parliament since 2004, elected in the Division of Kingsford Smith in the Sydney suburbs shortly after dissolving the band. Those of us that have been following his career know that he has been politically active for years, including a minor party run for the Australian Senate back in 1984 and using an appearance at the opening ceremonies of the Sydney Olympics to stick a finger in the eye of then Prime Minister John Howard for his treatment of aborigines.

Our western desert is currently at 45 degrees, too.

  • I did work for the Australian Labor Party over the last year. They had a great resource in Garrett in that they would trott him out to do door to door canvassing in heavily Labor and Green electorates.

He got attention, and he didn’t even need to do that odd little robot dance that he always did.

But Labor is heavily tied to the coal industry. So, watch to see how well he will be able to buck that power base.

    Best of luck, Peter!
