Best Line of Last Night’s Debate

Joe Biden on Rudolph Giuliani:

There are only three things he mentions in a sentence: a noun and a verb and 9/11

  • I disagree, Ted. The best line, because it said so much about the candidate who uttered it was when Hillary said, “I did not say that it should be done, but I certainly recognize why Governor Spitzer is trying to do it,” in reference to Spitzer’s plan to issue driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants in New York.

My intent in posting this is not to debate the merits of Spitzer’s proposal, but to assert that the quote is yet another indication of how the GOP will savage Hillary as essentially “Kerry in a skirt” if she is the Democratic nominee. Other examples of her evasiveness and inconsistencies were accrurately cited by the other candidates. After the debate, the Clinton campaign posted a whiny video on their website about the others “piling on” Hillary.

Hillary is incapable of being straight with us. She is already arrogantly acting like she has this nomination in the bag and she brings to the public mind all the things they disliked about her husband’s administration…and little of what they remember fondly. Her insincerity and unwillingness to take a stand, when coupled with the fact that many voters say over and over that they would never vote for her, continue to make the case that she would be a disastrous nominee for the Democrats.

  • Rex,

I don’t see anything wrong with her “arrogantly” acting as if she had the nomination in the bag. That’s standard behavior for front-runners, to help create an aura of invincibility. Locally, Giffords did exactly the same thing in the CD8 Dem primary, you didn’t complain then.

Your complaint about Hillary’s refusal to take a stand is, of course, completely valid. She’s incredibly careful in her phrasing to try to ensure she can always have it both ways … in the example you cite, she can tell anti-immigration sorts she didn’t support Spitzer’s actions, while she can tell immigrant-rights supports she understands Spitzer’s actions, and both sides are nudged toward believing she’s in their corner, unless they really analyze what she said.

As you (and her competitors) note, this is hardly an isolated example.

On the other hand, polling all year has shown a consistent decline in the number of people who claim they would “never vote for Hillary”. As people look at the current state of affairs, and examine options, they are asking themselves why they should feel that way, and many are at least willing to reconsider their view. That doesn’t mean they _will_ vote for her, but it does mean they no longer will reflexively vote against her.

  • Rudy Giuliani should stick with just the basic sentance structure of subject and predicate, sans 911.

Rudy Giuliani’s worst enemy is 911.

His negligence need to be investigated.
