I Suppose He Was “Tied Up” Then Too…

Even as a frequent critic of John McCain, I thought he was pretty clever with his “I was tied up…” jibe when going after Hillary Clinton for funding the Bethel Arts Center, which has been derided as the “hippie museum.”

Of course, “hippie museum” is pretty far from what it actually is.

The only thing that is as tiresome as the self-congratulatoriness (izzat a word?) of the “Woodstock Generation” is conservative politicians who make half-baked (yes, I intended the pun) attempts to link every left-of-center boomer politician to the excesses of the era. Given that at least two of the current presidential candidates hadn’t hit puberty when Jimi, Janis and Sha Na Na hit the stage, hopefully these tired arguments will soon be over.

I’ve always found it funny that folks tried to tie the Clintons to all of this, especially in the case of Hillary. The then awkward, bespectacled Goldwater Girl and Wellesley student is supposed to have been toking it up with Wavy Gravy? Puh-leeze.

Anyhow, let me get back to my main point. Yes…I have one.

So, this “Woodstock Hippie Museum” that is sticking in John McCain’s craw is so bad that he is running not one, but two ads on the subject (here and here). Sticking in that craw (yes, mammals don’t have craws, but work with me) so bad that he went ahead and co-sponsored an amendment to remove the funding. So bad that he took a break from making flapjacks in Manchester and working a grip and grin in Council Bluffs to vote on the amendment.

Okay, I made up the last part. Once again, he was nowhere to be found when it came time to vote on an issue that he has been telling people is so darned important. This sort of thing ain’t new. The Tucson Citizen has editorialized on it, and even fellow Republicans have jumped on him for it. As I’ve noted here before, the McCain has missed more votes than any other Senator except Tim Johnson, who has spent most of the last year in a hospital. Somehow, the rigors of campaigning haven’t prevented other Senators from only missing, at most, a third of the votes McCain has missed.

NB - Say, over the next couple of decades, what big musical event will Republicans saddle Gen X Dems with? The US Festival? Live Aid? That Sex Pistols show in San Antonio?

  • Comrade Ted,
I love it that you constantly prove my point that you dems are scared of the candidacy of John McCain. You know McCain is the ONLY Republican at this time that can beat her. It’s going to be fun to watch Hillary squirm ……….

  • Stick a fork in the doddering McCain. He’s done.

  • Hillary was squirmin’ in tonight’s debate. Did you hear, Kucinich saw a UFO at Shirley Maclaine’s…priceless.

  • I’d like to bring up another case of McCain being AWOL.

For years I admired McCain as a man who championed the rights of Latinos. There have been many cases in which McCain stood up for them when other politicians - Democrats as well as Republicans - were nowhere to be found.

So what happened when the DREAM act came up? McCain stuck around long enough to punch his right-wing ticket on some other bills that were on the floor that night, but caught a plane to New Hampshire about an hour before the DREAM act came up.

I understand the difficulties of sitting in the Senate while running for President. But he’s drawing a damn nice salary, and this was an important issue - or it should have been important to McCain. He should have stuck around and voted. He also should have supported the kids who have done all the right things and simply want to become educated, taxpaying citizens.

There was a time when I seriously thought about lending my backing to him. I’ve known him in the past. Many of his current and former staffers are friends.

But when I was approached - and I was - I politely declined.

See the above for some of my reasons.

  • Ted, they are going to smack you guys down for attending New Kids On The Block concerts.

But it is just hangin’ tough for those accused of that.
