The Haps in Cochise
Cochise County Supervisor Paul Newman is not going to run for another term. Newman has been serving on the board since 2001. He worked hard on conservation and environmental issues, which didn’t win him any friends among his colleagues or the county’s buisiness establishment.
Occasionally, his fights against the “development at all costs” attitudes and the cronyism on the board bore fruit (here and here). Throughout his career, he had been able to deliver for Douglas, the largest city in the district. Over the last couple of years, even his support from activists in Douglas has evaporated. It’s too bad, I have doubts that whoever replaces him will speak up as forcefully as he did about sustainable development and environmentally friendly policies.
Marsha Arzberger, first lady of Kansas Settlement, will be “termed out” next year. As expected, Manny Alvarez will be running for her seat. Pat Fleming, currently the chair of the Cochise County Democratic Party is expected to run for the house. No word yet on whether Republican Jennifer Burns, who is not termed out, will make a try at the now open Senate seat. Burns, a moderate from Picture Rocks in Pima County, is not well liked by the very conservative Republican activists in Cochise County.
Side note here: which is more ridiculous, that folks in Buckeye and Sells get represented largely by people chosen out of Cochise County, or that legislators from Cochise County have to count on votes from Buckeye and Sells? Either way, District 25 is Exhibit A in the case against using the same number of districts as when our state was a third of the size it is now.

Every once in a while, you say something that makes a hell of a lot of sense. Only having 30 legislative districts is plain dumb and I submit my District (23) as another example because of the Avondale influence on an otherwise Pinal County dominated district.

Multi-member House districts are also a Voting Rights Act violation, as they supress Latino and African American electoral influence.
But you can’t win a lawsuit that you don’t file!
