Lopez for Senate?

Linda LopezLinda Lopez has taken the plunge and filed papers to run for State Senate. The trouble is, Victor Soltero has not yet announced whether he will retire at the end of this term.

Lopez had been trying to convince Soltero to step down and run for house again. Apparently, she either gave up trying to convince him of this or maybe she thinks that taking this extra step will be enough to push him out.

Lopez may not be in the best position for a run against Soltero. She stepped down from the Sunnyside School District Board earlier this year and averted what surely would have been a recall against her after a controversial power grab. But, Lopez, if she hopes to continue her legislative career, really has no choice but to make a go of it.

Advice for Lopez: I would steer away from using the Star’s controversial (and factually shaky and badly edited) article in March that declared Soltero “worst of the legislature” against him, since Lopez was lumped into that group by the article’s hamhanded logic.

  • The Arizona State Legislature and the Democratic Caucus would be better of if the Honorable Ms. Lopez would just retire. She cares only about expanding her power and not what is best for her colleagues or constituents.

  • Democrats in Southern Arizona need to call on Soltero to run for reelection and also have a candidate ready to face off with Lopez in the event that he retires. I agree with what Albert has said above me about Lopez. After what she pulled during the budget proposals, I am now a firm believer that she does not have the interests of her constituents in mind.
