What More Is There to Say?
There are moments when I wonder if there is some element of the Republican party that wants to make sure that Jon Stewart has enough material. “Wide stance“? At least he didn’t blame a black guy.
Maybe it is more nefarious than that. Some of these guys are so wedded to the notion that gays are uniformly sleazy and predatory, maybe they throw a guy like Mark Foley or their Young Republican leaders out there in an attempt to prove it. Hmm…could be. (Check this one out before they take it down. See who they feature then go to the first “Bonus Byte.”)
Larry Craig voted for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and hasn’t exactly been enthused about domestic partnerships either. So, he’s against gays in committed relationships getting those relationships legally recognized because this would destroy the moral fabric of society, but he’s all for trolling public restrooms for sex? Yeah, that has no effect on the larger society.
Craig has been dogged by rumors of homosexuality for years, most recently last May. Assuming he is gay, and he gets forced out of the closet, what will the story be then? That our country is so hostile to gays that he was forced into the closet and keep his activities “underground,” and the pressure got to be too much? Well, Senator, who was partly responsible for perpetuating the hostility towards gays in this country? Hmm?

As for me, I am always disapointed when so-called “conservative” bigots turn out to be hypocrites. It is such a cliche. Where are the honest-to-goodness bigots like we had in the good old days? I want to take them down for their ideas, not their personal pecadillos.
Senator Craig was one of the few members of the Senate to say something openly racist on the floor. This was at a time when even Strom Thurmond was pretending to be a torchbearer for racial harmony. In an age when “conservative” bigots couch their racism in code words, it was shocking to hear Craig discuss the “free white male” as an “endangered species.” But it was also nice to hear a “conservative” actually beig honest about his bigoted views. It made our job easier.

I am sure that many conservatives will circle the wagons around Craig saying that foot tap is not an interest in gay sex or whatever. What blows my mind is how often they attack the courts and defense attorneys but then appeal to the same beautiful part of our legal system…that there must be evidence and proof to convict…when it is one of their own who are in trouble. I had the same type of arguments with some about Trish Groe on a conservative site. In this case, there was an admission of a “sickness”…a need for therapy…and a coming to Jesus Christ…making it all better.
The same conservatives often have a lot to say about being tough on crime, often find a hatred for therapy in the justice system, typically wish for three strikes your out, no probation, truth in sentencing, etc.
I was sure that whatever happened to Larry Craig, now that he has admitted his guilt and taken a plea, he will want to serve his misdemeanor conviction and take it like a conservative. Instead he is now appealing to the fact that he should have gotten an attorney before he pled guilty even though that choice came, was it, months (????) after the arrest?
Anyway…the ironies abound.

Maybe he can use the Bill Clinton defense and say that he never inhaled, or swallowed at it were. Does that make it better?

I truly feel sorrow and pity for Larry Craig. If he is indeed a gay (or bisexual) man, then he has doubtless been affected all his life by the unbridled contempt society has for men who are attracted to other men. That is probably even more intense in rural, conservative states like Idaho (think about Matthew Shepherd) and Craig grew up there.
As Craig matured, he apparently felt compelled to mask his true identity, even to the point of voting against legal protections for gay people. This sort of self-loathing and camouflage is not uncommon. Why else would closeted gays like Craig feel compelled to seek brief, loveless encounters in public restrooms?
It is truly pathetic that Larry Craig’s career in public service is going to end this way and I feel nothing but pain for him and his family. There is no reason for anyone to exult over his downfall. Rather, his case is yet another clarion call for all of us to accept and embrace our brothers and sisters who happen to be gay. No one should have to feel so terrible about who they are that they engage in shadowy trysts or vote against their own self-interest.
