Glassman Update
Rodney Glassman is having a campaign party tonight at the Maverick (King of Clubs!) at 6622 E Tanque Verde. The party goes from 5:00 to 7:30, and everyone is welcome to attend. It is hosted by Sheriff Clarence Dupnik.
The event is free, because Glassman has already raised all of the money he can raise. He had a self-imposed limit of twenty dollars for contributions. This means it took a long time to meet the maximum, but he met his goal with an average contribution of around $19. This makes each of his $20 contributors his biggest contributor. I know this because everytime he sees one of us he says, “hey, it’s my biggest contributor.” Only a couple of months until the election, thank God.

$19.69, according to Glassman at the Sonoran PDA meeting this past Wednesday.

The key is Glassman never said he wouldn’t except independent expenditures. If he does this will surely violate his word and not make all you ” my biggest supporter”. Let us see if he keeps his word and refuses “Independent Expenditures”.

W. Stephenson…interesting point, but why would he need to do it? He is already enormously popular, has a huge number of supporters, a great campaign staff, and is sitting in a majority Democrat registered city…with Democrats feeling excited as hell about voting.
The only reason he would take on independent expenditures that I can think of is if Orien supporters, or that Click led business crew, form an independent group to attack him (like they did so ineffectively against Leal). If they do, then it seems to me that I would have no problem whatsoever with him breaking his promise and enjoying the fruits of independent groups. More of a tit for tat thing in a case like this.
Frankly, though, I think Rodney will win this with his matching funds and $20 amounts only…and won’t need to stoop to that.

How can a candidate, running under the City’s Matching Fund campaign, signed contract and all, accept “independent expenditures?” They can’t.
Under the City ordinance, independent campaigns can run “campaigns” for or against certain candidates, without the candidates knowledge or approval.

I understand. What you are saying is Glassman’s word is only good unless times get tough.
If the Democratic Party run paid adds for Glassman then you will no longer be his biggest contributor, and he violates his word which is the foundation on which he built his campaign.

“Independent expenditures” are “independent” because the beneficiaries are not involved in how they are spent or managed. This is why they are called “independent.” Mr. Glassman will have little say in whether or not someone does this.
It is easy to be cynical about independent expenditures because there have been times when they have been abused. However, I can think of two instances when the candidates clearly had no control over an independent committee. One was the Mayor’s race in 2003, when Republican partisans started an independent campaign of personal attacks that was contrary to the positive tone that Mayor Walkup worked hard to project. Another was on a campaign I worked on in 1994 when a well-intentioned independent campaign mis-spelled the name of the office we were running for on their signs. We had to work through intermediaries to get that corrected.
In short, it is unfair to blast Glassman for independent expenditures, particularly when no such thing has even occurred and he would have no say in the matter if he did. I suspect that this poster is just picking nits.
