Yeah, What the Heck
I got a note from Dave Croteau last week asking if he can be listed in the Election Aught Seven section. I get requests like this once in a while. Since many of them are for people that I know little about and are in some far flung part of the state, most of the time I issue a polite no.
I list candidates only when they meet two criteria:
- I can vote for them.
- I will vote for them.
Being that I am a partisan hack, this means that I am only listing Democrats. However, the only Democratic candidate filed for mayor is Michael Toney. I’m sure he is a good guy and has never kicked his dog. However, he is a write-in who has also filed one of those exemption papers that says he is spending less than $500 on the race. For some amount less than $500, he needs to get 1904 write-in votes to get nominated. I’ll probably go ahead and write him in, but I’m not holding out much hope that there will be a Democratic nominee. (That last name is spelled “T-O-N-E-Y.”)
Croteau is a founder of Nam Jam, our annual Viet-Nam veteran’s tribute and music festival. His website boasts of endorsements from veterans advocate Mike Brewer (my boss when I worked for the Tucson Amigos), Ann Nichols, Jeff Latas and, most importantly, Chuck Maultsby of Chuck Wagon and the Wheels.
So, Dave, congrats. You are the first non-Democrat to make the Election Aught Seven list. Not only that, you’ll be on the top of the list since mayor, at least on the ballot, is a more vaunted position than councilmember.
