Kinda Makes You Wonder

Caught this story in the Arizona Republic on Saturday. It is actually a shorter version of a longer story that ran in the Los Angeles Times. The shortened story left out some details and things were a bit confusing as a result.

Here is what stood out for me. The case in question regards a very rare Ferrari Enzo that was pulverized in a car accident after the driver was travelling an estimated 120 miles per hour on the Pacific Coast Highway. When the charges were detailed, something struck me:

Trevor Michael Karney was in custody Friday on misdemeanor charges of drunken driving, resisting arrest and giving false information to a police officer, along with a possible federal immigration violation, Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said.

Immigration violation? Was Mr. Karney in this country illegally? There was a reference to his “sneaking into the United States,” but in the context of his being a felon on the run rather than anything about his immigration status.

The reason why I bring this up is because we can all cite instances of crime stories of Latin American and even Middle Eastern immigrants where the status of the person is detailed, even if they are here legally. Why not in this case? Is it because the guy is Irish?

  • “Investigators allege that he hid out in Ireland before recently sneaking back into the U.S. through Mexico”

  • The fact that he was Irish was one reason they say little about it. The other reason is that he apparently could afford a Ferrari.

It’s part of what the GOP is all about. They can’t win on the issues. So they like to bash. They bash immigrants. They bash gays. They bash union members. Anything they can do to pit 51% or more of society against the other part of it. But underlying all that is more than a hint of both racism and class anger. Hence they are far quicker to bash the poor Mexican, the poor (or one you failed to mention) the poor Korean than the rich Irishman.

I wonder how Republicans would survive if people realized that bashing whole groups of other people is stupid and politicians who engage in it do so because if they ran on what they really believed, no one would vote for them.

  • Using the Republic and LA Times as sources to demonstrate bias on illegal immigration — excuse me, that would be undocumented migrant activity — is kind of silly. Also, doesn’t this report give even more credibility to the claim that the porous southern border is a security threat that needs to be locked down?

Finally, how would you have the following stories address the immigration status of the alleged criminals? Is it not part of the story?

  • I’m a Republican and could really care less what country this guy is from. He should serve his sentence and then be deported if he is here illegaly. To me, this is just another instance where somebody who shouldn’t be here has committed a crime. I’m sorry Eli, the color of his skin (which is much lighter than mine I’m sure) doesn’t really matter to me.

  • It may not matter to you, TEEJ, but that’s irrelevant. The point is, as Ted accurately cites, is the hypocrisy of many people in the debate about illegal immigration. The media, the Minutemen and other morons are quick to point out the legal status of Latino and Asian immigrants if they are poor and undocumented, but nary a word is said about the rich illegal aliens and those from English-speaking countries. That is what should matter to you.

  • The media? Is this the same media that refuses to refer to illegal aliens as illegal aliens and instead refers to them as migrants? To be honest, the media never really points out the legal status of anybody because to do so would be politically incorrect. That’s what should matter to all of us, smart folks like you and morons like me;)

  • Oh boy, what are you smoking, teej? The media doesn’t point out the legal status of undocumented immigrants? Much of the media may use terms you object to but the whole media does identify the legal status of undocumented immigrants, primarily when they are Latinos.

  • Ha ha ha, if you really must know, I was smoking a nice Ashton cigar the other night for my birthday but I really don’t think that has anything to do with this. Keep the comedy coming though because other than the AZ Watchtower, this is my favorite blog.

  • Unsure why you are moderating my previous comment, but here’s another case:

  • I smoked a couple of Ashtons recently. Smooth and a good price. I went into my cigar shop the other day and they were plumb out of Ashton. I usually smoke CAO. I love the Italia and Samba. I can’t afford the higher priced ones.
