It’s a Power Trio, Just Like Cream, Rush and Sleater-Kinney
Last night, Coconino County Democrats met to decide what three names to forward to the Board of Supervisors when they select a replacement for the recently resigned State Representative Ann Kirkpatrick.
The folks they picked were:
Flagstaff City Councilmember Kara Kelty - Kelty was the top vote getter. She has had a variety of jobs in Flagstaff including work at Northern Arizona University and for Junior Achievement. She had also previously served in the Peace Corps in the Philipines and Guatemala. She has been active in environmental causes as well as with her church.
Former Coconino County Supervisor Tom Chabin - Chabin also served for a time on the Tuba City School board. Chabin served on the board for two terms (1992-2000) where he built a pro-conservation record. He considered running for congress against J. D. Hayworth in 2000, but dropped the idea when he decided he didn’t have the taste for the rigors of fundraising.
Tony Gonzales - Gonzales is a Flagstaff attorney who was recently elected one of the Vice-Chairs of the State Democratic Party. In fact, I think he’s the youngest one right now.

One thing the Coconino Dems need to keep in mind is the race in ‘O8. They have to select a person with close Native-American ties that will commit to representing the whole district, not just Flagstaff.
Because if they pick a person that is only popular in Flagstaff and an influential tribal member runs and knocks the Flagstaff appointee out, then Flagstaff is cut off from any real legislative representation at least until 2012.
The voter registration in LD2 is 68% Native-American. The Coconino Board of Supervisors need to remember that this is not a Flagstaff popularity contest but about substantive legislative representation.
Whomever they choose, I hope they don’t insult their Navajo seat mates like Kirkpatrick did when she she called one of them “another Sylvia Laughter”.

hey winkydink, why do you hate Kirkpatrick so much? did she slight you in some way? from what I’ve seen and read and heard from people in the district and on the rez, Kirkpatrick is extremely popular. I mean, she easily won reelection last year in LD2 which you so keenly pointed out as being 68% Native-American… Every time you post lately it is to bash her, I don’t get it.

Yeah, You’re right, I need to lighten up and try decaf. I really like Ann but I can’t bare to lose this seat again. She has to prove that she can pull it off and she’s not instilling a lot of confidence in the folks of CD1, that really want a Dem to win this time.
She has been a good legislator, except for insulting Albert Tom the way she did. That hurt Albert and it hurt her relationship with the Navajo people more than is realized by us outsiders. Albert’s a friend.
