Lady Bird Johnson
Claudia “Lady Bird” Johnson, First Lady of the United States from 1963-1969, has died at the age of 94.
Given the outsized nature of her husband’s style and the times he governed in, it can be hard to remember the subtle way she transformed this country. She was a strong advocate for both conservation (she was instrumental in the passage of the Highway Beautification Act in 1965 over the objections of the billboard industry) and for Head Start.
