But Everyone Loves Recess, You Can Play Kickball…or Hide and Seek…

Tim BeeTim Bee suggested last week that he may end the Senate session with a recess rather than Sine Die. The purpose of this would be to avoid violating a court order in the seemingly endless Flores case. Yep, far better to pull a parliamentary manuever than actually deal with the issue.

So far, there isn’t any indication that Jim Weiers is interested in doing the same stunt on the House side. Weiers hasn’t exactly demonstrated a great deal of enthusiasm for taking cues from Bee lately.

One unaddressed aspect of this is that the laws the legislature has passed this session won’t go into effect until 90 days after Sine Die. Okay…it would be nice to see some of the butt stupid legislation that these guys have passed not go into effect at all. However, Bee and his colleagues were fighting to see that this stuff got passed and probably argued that these laws were necessary. If Sine Die is delayed until, say, November, these laws that they argued were critical for the future of the citizenry only a few weeks back wouldn’t go into effect until February. If they were so blasted important, why delay their implementation for months?

NB - I’ve been told that budget bills go into effect on the first day of the fiscal year (July 1st) no matter how much the legislature chooses to drag its feet on other matters. We will miss out on the comedy of their having to have a meeting under candlelight because the state didn’t have the money to pay its bills. Say, another 13 days of arguing about the budget and we’ll get that anyway…naw, they seem to have gotten their act together.

  • My favorite part of that story was how Bee was stupid enough to admit what they are trying to do. Does Bee think that Judge Collins doesn’t read the paper? Or that Tim Hogan doesn’t know how to cut and paste the article into a motion to the judge?

  • My favorite part is Ted describing some of the legislation as “butt stupid.” Now that is comedy!

  • It always amazes me how Republicans claim to the the party of “rule of law” and “law and order”…that they even somehow have a monopoly on “tough on crime” but yet how quickly they ignore it and use lawyerese (another thing they decry) to get around the law and court orders.

Judge Collins is one instance…Scooter Libby and the movement to pardon is yet another shameful one.
