I’m Not Complaining, Just Observing

The Republic’s Plugged In blog has reported that the finance director for the State Republican party has quit. She has only been there for two months. The previous finance director quit just minutes after the election of new chairman Randy Pullen.

Part of the trouble for these folks is that the “Country Club Republicans” that Pullen and his supporters seem so intent on alienating are exactly the sort of people that keep the Republican party financed. Word I’ve heard from Republican activists is that the finance folks had been reduced to begging for twenty and thirty dollar checks from donors that used to give hundreds at a shot.

So, the talk goes, what Pullen needs is a strong level headed person on his team that has shown an ability to fund raise and can help re-establish broken ties with the national party.

Bruce AshTheir solution: Bruce Ash. I suppose this works on paper: a successful buisinessman already active in national conservative and Republican politics, plus he’s from Pima county which means everyone will assume he is more moderate than say, Don Goldwater.

But, if a part of the trouble with Pullen is how his views and statements alienate Republican donors and even voters, this guy may be the wrong choice. Last year, for example, he used a radio commentary to compare opponents of a South Side shopping mall development to Hezbollah. He also ran a group called “Independent People Like You,” which ran a series of ads and mailers so inflamatory against Democrats that some supporters of Republican Bob Walkup wonder if it was the reason the otherwise popular mayor didn’t clear 50% of the vote.

Hey, Pullen and Ash would make a great tag team. Each one can alternate press releases and see who can alienate more people.

NB - Ash’s radio editorials are posted on his web page. Some of his more inflamatory ones aren’t included, but he does seem to have a particular dislike for Gabrielle Giffords.
