Grijalva, Giffords Host Border and Immigration Confabs
Gabrielle Giffords is hosting a border security summit in Douglas today. This comes on the heels of the recent drug-related violence in Cananea. The summit will be at the Douglas Visitors Center, 345 16th Street. That’s sixteen blocks from the border for those of you that are counting.
The invitees include law enforcement officials as well as elected officials from both parties, including Republican Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever, Bisbee Mayor Ray Oertle, Sierra Vista Mayor Bob Strain and Douglas Mayor Ray Borane. Also, Agua Prieta Presidente Municipal José Antonio Cuadras García, who is a member of PRI, and Naco Presidente Municipal Jose Lorenzo Villegas Vasquez, who is a member of PAN, so you could say that four parties are represented.
One of the law enforcement officials invited is Agua Prieta Director of Public Safety Alfonso Novoa Novoa. I’m only printing that name because I think its cool.
Raúl Grijalva is also having a forum, this one on the related issue of immigration. Grijalva’s forum will be on Sunday at the El Pueblo Neighborhood Center at 6th and Irvington. It gets undeway at 1:00 and features special guest Rep. Luís Gutierrez of Illinois, who has authored numerous immigration bills, including some with our own Jeff Flake. He’s of Puerto Rican descent, but represents a district with numerous Mexican-Americans and Polish-Americans (my kind of district), many of whom are either immigrants or who are first generation Americans so he’s taken up the cause and become an important leader on immigration issues.
Gutierrez shaved off his mustache years ago. This done to avoid rude questions from Stephen Colbert, no doubt.

If you like Alfonso Novoa Novoa’s name, I submit former Chihuahua Senator and current SAGARPA undersecretary Jeffrey Max Jones Jones. Sweet.
