Does This Guy Read His Own Press Releases?

Early last month, State Republican Chair Randy Pullen sent out a press release on the eve of President Bush’s visit to Yuma warning Democrats not to oppose the President’s stance on the border. Of course, Democrats were probably closer to Bush on the issue than Pullen himself was.

The press release, sent on April 5th, contained this paragraph:

Just one year later, progress has been made in our efforts to increase border security here in Arizona. What is most important now is that we continue working together to find new ways to finish the job that’s been started. And on behalf of the more than one-million Arizona Republicans, I say to the President, whether you’re standing up to the Democrats in Congress who are looking to raise taxes, the Democrats who are looking to surrender to the terrorists, or the Democrats who are looking to undo what we’ve done to strengthen our border security, you can count on the Republicans of Arizona to stand tall with you.

I could go on and on about Pullen and his support for PAN, which was taken to be a shot at the policies of the Bush Administration and much of party leadership.

But here is the funny part: yesterday’s press release from Pullen, decrying the current immigration compromise:

On behalf of the more than one million registered Arizona Republicans who care very deeply about this state and have a tremendous love for our great nation, I am very disappointed in this new legislation about to be introduced in the U.S. Senate next week. The bill would allow all 12 million plus illegal aliens to remain in this country indefinitely and provides them, as well as their immediate families, a path to citizenship. This is amnesty, as they will be working and living in the United States, while those who have applied legally for Visas are still awaiting entry.

Of course, the plan that Pullen is now trashing is pretty darned close to what the President has been proposing for months, and is being boosted by a certain Jon Kyl, who Pullen may remember is a Republican Senator from his own state.

So, here’s the upshot: Democrats get trashed last month for not supporting the President’s plans, but this month, Pullen trashes the President’s plan. To paraphrase the great Henry Fountain Ashurst: never has the cold clammy hand of consistency rested long upon his shoulder.

Pullen has announced a “press availability” this afternoon about the immigration compromise. I haven’t decided which would be more useful for those attending: tall rubber boots, or dramamine for the motion sickness.

  • I’ve got to say, the guy is crazy. I am a strong Republican, but Pullen does not speak for me. His incessant press releases are becoming rather obnoxious.

  • I think this is a perfect example of why the Republicans are fracturing in so many ways. Despite the calls from some for a “big-tent” that tent is not so big on this issue. When it comes down to it, many Republicans see the need to bring Hispanic and Latino voters into the fold and the fact that the business wing of the party (who funds that party) is not so hostile on illegal immigration. They/we need the labor.

This is the perfect bill to triangulate on. Giffords is doing a marvelous job with this given her constituency…as is Kyl for MOST of his constituency.

  • Watch out. I doubt if Mr. Pullen is up on blogger’s input, but please don’t contribute to his education.
I, for one, definitely don’t want to contribute to his performance improvement. The best thing we can do is leave him as his is.

  • Haaagh!! Huwaaaagh!!

This immigration thing is a circus. Well, wait a minute. I guess Iraq is a circus. Well, health care is a real mess. At least we’ve balanced the budget. Oh wait……
