Sound and Fury and All That

Interesting bit I failed to say anything about during the week: an article in the Star on Thursday talked about the aftermath of last year’s hearings about a controversial speech given by Dolores Huerta. The follow up: nothing.

Okay, flashback to last year around this time. Tucson High invited Huerta to speak to an assembly. Huerta commented that “Republicans hate Hispanics” and this, of course, made the papers and the legislature became involved. Rep. Jonathan Paton made the most noise about this, appearing on Bill O’Reilly and holding hearings.

As it turns out, nothing came of these hearings. Paton was a little preoccupied and couldn’t follow-up on a request to the Attorney General for an opinion on the matter. Near as I can tell, none of his Republican colleagues were dodging mortar shells along the Euphrates, why couldn’t any of them follow up?

Oh, it’s Terry Goddard’s fault:

Former Rep. John Allen, the Republican who chaired last year’s committee, said part of the reason a request was never made was that he knew what Goddard’s opinion would be.

“There isn’t a lot of confidence in our attorney general,” said Allen. “That might have been a factor. Why send a dead letter?”

Wah wah wah.

Okay guys, get this right: if y’all sent the letter and nothing happened, then that’s Goddard’s fault. If you don’t send the letter, that’s your fault.

Oh, by the way, Democratic Leader Phil Lopes is the guy that managed to get an opinion on the matter. If you need something done, talk to one of the Democrats, I guess.

The article also had a bit on the CPS hearings that Paton has organized. Hopefully, Paton has learned that he can’t count on his fellow Republicans to follow through when the TV lights are off and it’s time to take action.

In a related matter: anyone know what ever happened to Sen. Jack Harper’s “independent investigation” of Harry Mitchell’s alleged involvement in problems at the State Veteran’s Home? Just curious.

  • I bet Harper has Mitchell on “double-secret probation”, just waiting for a chance to nail him for something else that will clearly the Congresman has no control over.

Perhaps it will be the new immigration bill? Harper could conveniently ignore the fact that Kyl and McCain supprt the bill…….

  • I believe Huerta’s actual quote was “Republicans hate Latinos.”
