Say It Ain’t So, Dave
Rumors are afoot that three Democrats are prepared to vote for the Republican House budget, Linda Lopez, Pete Rios (who both spent significant time in Jim Weiers’s office yesterday) and of all people Dave Bradley.
I campaigned with Bradley last year when I was running in the Democratic House primary, and I’ve known the guy for years. I am not willing to call the guy a “sell-out,” but I am severely disappointed that he would vote for this budget.
At last week’s District 28 meeting, Bradley talked about the budget. What struck me was that he spoke as though this House budget was a fait acompli and we Democrats should be resigned to it and hope for a few marginal changes. He compared this to last year’s budget fight where a handful of Democrats voted against the budget with no results. The comparison just doesn’t hold for this session, given the numbers the Democrats currently have and given how many Republican defections there are expected to be. It also ignores the fact that the Senate budget, not perfect but miles ahead of this one, has significant House support and the support of the Governor.

Anyone who lives in a district whose member supports the Jim Weiers budget should hold that House member accountable.
It just so happens that I live in a Phoenix district in which my member may support the Weiers spending plan. I’ve sent him an email telling him that he may well lose my vote if he doesn’t back the Senate budget.
Please do the same for your House members.

I think everyone owes an apology to David Bradley. While there were reasons to suspect other legislators of potentially flipping on the budget, I’m not sure that ever applied to Dave.
