If She Wore a Hat, She’d Be Throwing It In

Mary Kim TitlaI wondered a few weeks back if the speculation about Mary Kim Titla runing for congress was ginned up mostly by folks who thought it was a great idea, but hadn’t spoken to her about it. In fact, one prominent Democrat who had talked her up had even admitted that she hadn’t spoken to her in a while.

Well it appears that she is in. This from an e-mail to supporters:

After much soul searching and prayer and after being encouraged by voters, I am humbled and honored to inform you I have decided to run for Congress for Arizona’s First Congressional District as a Democratic candidate. I will be making an official announcement soon.

Believing I am the change needed in Arizona’s First Congressional District, I am ready to be a real voice for the people and although I am a conservative Democrat, I intend to reach out and better serve all citizens of District 1 no matter what party they belong to. I want to hear from the people so I will initiate a “Hear The People Tour” when I make my official announcement. I’m listening carefully now.

For more than 20 years I have been speaking out and advocating for children and youth. I will speak out about quality education for our children and strengthening families. Other issues I care about include the War in Iraq and coming up with a plan now to bring our troops home, cleaning up corruption in Washington and making sure your tax dollars are spent wisely.

Your support is respectfully requested and above all, your prayers for strength, guidance and discernment.

Thank you to those who have already been praying for me and my family. I need it now more than ever as I embark on this new journey.

With respect,

Mary Kim Titla
Candidate
AZ Congressional District 1

She says that a website will be up soon (you guessed it, it will be at marykimtitla.com). If she pulls this off, she will be the first Native American to represent Arizona in Congress.

I could be completely wrong here, but if I recall correctly, I believe she was involved in fundraising efforts for the Catholic Diocese of Phoenix during her time here. I also think I might recall her being on the advisory board of the Diocesan newspaper. Therefore, she may be pro-life or something of the sort, and might subsequently self-identify as conservative. Or maybe she just realizes that most Democrats outside of Coconino and Yavapai counties in the district are relatively conservative Democrats.

  • I just wanted to say that every day I check this blog. I can’t remember what political life was outside of Rum, Romanism & Rebellion. It sure as heck beats depending on the Arizona Republic for political news.

  • Careful Josh or you will wind up in the “Blurb-O-Matic”

  • Excellent idea, Squib. :)

  • Mary Kim might be a nice person, but I don’t think she is the best choice to represent the folks in AZ-CD-1. As a conservative? Give me a break. What we need is a Progressive who will give the people of CD-1, as well as the people in AZ the representation in DC that we need. He is there for the little guy. He is there for minorities. He is there for equality. He is there for the environment. Yes, you can balance environmental protection with a booming economy. We can’t keep raping the economy to fatten the portfolios of the corporations at the expense of the people.
Development cannot be the only economy of AZ. We must have education, research, manufacturing, and a future as our motivation for our vote. With Education First, the rest will come. Education has a wide path, and not just classroom stuff. Education is learning to make change happen at the least impact to people, the environment, and the future. I believe Howard can start this process after the results the dismal three terms Renzi has left us.

Howard Shanker is the best choice for AZ-CD-1.
