They Are Legion…

I attended the State Democratic Party meeting yesterday. I heard from more than a few folks that I haven’t listed the possible Democratic candidates in CD 1. Yeah, because I haven’t written enough about CD1. I don’t even live in CD 1.

I have two reasons why I haven’t done a post on the candidates in CD 1. First there is a “Counting Chickens” phenomenon here. I’d like to know that Rick Renzi will be gone before I rub my hands together and cackle like Ming the Merciless. Second reason I haven’t listed the candidates: I would like to keep my entries under 800 words.

But, looking around at the other folks at the meeting who noted which possible candidates made cameos at the meeting (I saw Jim Pederson, Steve Owens, Ann Kirkpatrick and Ellen Simon), I had a bit of inspiration. Click on the picture at the left and you can download my CD 1 Bingo Game that you can bring to any major party event. You can use beans as markers, but if you choose to use coins, please use nickles, dimes or half dollars. We are Democrats, after all. The box with the question marks is for some other candidate who I haven’t thought of yet.

NB - The original game board had “Ann Archuleta” listed instead of Liz Archuleta. R Cubed doesn’t regret the error so much as regrets the fact that the error was caught. I was going to say that I had a flashback to Sonia Braga’s character in The Milagro Beanfield War (and who can blame me?), but then I remembered that the character was Ruby Archuleta.

  • Pretty sure it is Liz Archuleta, not Ann Archuleta. But I suggest you throw them both on there. I am sure there is an Ann Archuleta somewhere thinking of running.

  • Dagnabbit…I’ll fix that as soon as I get home.

  • I asked Jim Pederson if he was running. He said absolutely not…those were just rumors that he wished would go away.

  • Here is the list I have compiled so far -

Ann Kirkpatrick - rumor is she resigns this week from her leg seat.
Liz Archuleta - Coconino BOS and longtime activist in Flag. Formidable.
Ellen Simon - no secret she will run again.
Steve Owens - ADEQ director and twice candidate against Hayworth back when much of the district was CD5 (96 and 98). Longtime connections and home in Flag.
George Cordova - surprise victor of 2002 primary, good organizer and very popular with Pinal, Gila, and reservations.
Bob Mitchell - former Mayor of Casa Grande. Harry’s brother.
Carter Olson - Pinal County prosecutor, state party treasurer. Heard he won’t run because he just got appointed as judge.
Mary Kim Titla - former channel 12 reporter, currently works in Native American publishing.

I think the Pederson rumor was just that.

    Who am I forgetting?

  • To add to the list: Allen Affeldt, Howard Shanker,

  • It looks like it’s shaking out to be Kirkpatrick and Owens in CD1.

With all due respect to Ann, who is a wonderful person and Legislator, I really don’t think she has the where-with-all and ability to pull it off. She isn’t known outside of her district, no real experience with fundraising, no substantive network or machine and if she goes head to head with O’Halleran in the general election, she’s going to get clobbered.

My money is on Owens. Owens, being Al Gore’s former Chief of Staff (The Senate Years) will be able to bring so many resources to bear that he will dwarf all of the other candidates in fundraising and name recognition, especially when Al comes out to stump for him.

  • winkydink:

I question that. Until there are some numbers out (fundraising and name recognition being the biggest) you’d be a fool to call the ‘runoff’ (not that we have one in Arizona.) Whether Rick Renzi tries to carry it out through his whole term, or resigns sooner and forces an early election, could also have a big impact on the race (in a short season, name recognition and an organization in place will be more important relative to funding and the ability to get a message out than it will be in a longer campaign– though of course all four of those are important.)
