It Ain’t Me; I Blame My Sources
So, as it turns out Rick Renzi didn’t resign yesterday. He instead issued a short statement:
For several weeks, I have been the subject of leaked stories, conjecture, and false attacks about a land exchange. None of them bear any resemblance to the truth, including the rumor that I am planning on resigning.
The talk that was in the air was wrong about the date, but the fact that he’s been taken out of his party’s fundraising program for vulnerable incumbents and that local Republicans seem to already be looking for a candidate to run would indicate that he is not long for public office.
So, none of the stories bear any resemblance to the truth? That’s a pretty strong statement. Is Renzi saying there is nothing to the stories that he is being investigated? So, the FBI made a mistake and meant to, I dunno, knock down the door of the Sonoita Mini Market?

Then why did Renzi go to The Hill newspaper (http://www.thehill.com) for the following: Amid FBI investigation, Renzi steps down from 2 more panels
By Jackie Kucinich and Jonathan E. Kaplan

” … Renzi told The Hill earlier yesterday that he was “looking at” the prospect of resigning. …”
Rumors indeed.

Here’s my speculation, for whatever it’s worth.
John Boehner and the GOP want Rick to quit.
They’re trying to push him over the cliff, but he grabbed on to a bush (maybe George W.) and he’s refusing to let go without a fight.
He has no money, and he’s been denied access to their fund for targeted districts. He’s got $80K in the bank, which will buy him about 10 hours of the time he needs with his new D.C. defense lawyer (Grant Woods apparently has been replaced by someone with experience with corruption cases. There’s a lot of that exzpertise among Republican attorneys in D.C. these days).
Like the brontosaurus whose neck is in the mouth of a T-Rex, Rick is dead, but his brain hasn’t admitted it yet.

When do the new postage stamp prices take effect?
Renzi probably shouldn’t worry about buying new stamps for office mail. He won’t need ‘em.

Even if Renzi doesn’t resign, he is still pan tostado. He’ll be more ineffective than he was before his troubles and he’ll face a more difficult re-election campaign, if that is what he chooses. So for ‘08, CD 1 should have a lively contest.
¿Que no?

My view: Renzi didn’t resign because GOP leaders don’t want to lose D1 to a dem, which would be likely if there was a special election to fill the seat.
Renzi may not run again, then another R would have a better (but still tough) chance of keeping the CD1 seat in the 08 Presidential election. He may still be forced out depending on the course of the investigation.

It is just a matter of time before he has to go. The R’s can’t raise money start a campaign till he steps down. Meanwhile the D’s can file, raise money, hire consultants and be ready for the trigger. The longer he waits the better shape the D’s are in. Something else to think about. He has 12 kids that his “wife” is raising in VA. The same wife who’s “business” was raided by the FBI. I gotta give it to her. How does she find time to run a business and take care of all 12 kids while he is working so hard in congress? That is one amazing woman.
