Edwards in Tucson?

John EdwardsSomeone who would actually know such things tells me that John Edwards may be in Tucson next Thursday. As soon as I hear more details, I’ll give them to y’all.

This comes on the heels of a poll out of NAU that shows that Edwards would be the strongest candidate against the three leading Republican contenders (and no, Rob Haney, they didn’t poll for Duncan Hunter). Edwards is actually shown to beat Mitt Romney, who on paper should be the strongest nominee here besides John McCain.

  • According to Framer’s slicing and dicing of this poll, McCain still wins in this state against anyone, Hillary does poorly against all Republican candidates, and that the Republicans are still in the drivers seat here. Its early though and, yeah, McCain is our Senator afterall. He had BETTER do well here.

  • Yes, John Edwards will be in town Thursday, May 3, for a fundraiser. If anyone would like to attend for $100 each, please post here and I’ll send you the information. Or you can call Amanda Scott who works for the campaign in New Mexico. 505.224.8089. My email is nordshopper@comcast.net and I’ll be happy to answer any questions about this event. For this visit there will be no public events. He will be in Phoenix earlier in the day and in Tucson for only a few hours.

  • Yea!! Go Edwards, Go!

Um, curious as to why you say that “on paper” Romney should be the hardest one to beat in Arizona?

I have always considered AZ to be more of a libertarian old west state (Mesa, notwithstanding)than an evangelical one like those in the deep south.

  • That’s true, netrootsdem, but remember Romney is also very connected to the corporate world and to businesses. The Chamber of Commerce would probably work very hard for him in Arizona.

If “September Dawn” takes hold with the public, this new picture show starring Jon Voight and telling the true historical story of the Mountain Meadows massacre by Mormons of peaceable gentile men, women and children passers-through southern Utah, it’s over for Romney. Opening now in your local cineplex.

  • I think Tim is right. What makes Romney tough is that he is connected to corporate America and can raise money. What makes him weak in a Republican primary is that he isn’t a strong conservative. Much of his time has been spent recently sucking up to conservatives and claiming to be things he is not…like…always pro-life, always anti-gay rights, and always a hunter. He also has a record in Massachusetts that is decidedly not that of a conservatives conservative.

  • Actually, guys, I named Romney as “on paper” a strong nominee among Arizonans is that he has cultivated a pretty strong fundraising base among the Mormon community and he will no doubt be able to get a good grass roots campaign here in that community. He also has some pretty strong family connections in Arizona.
