The Journal Makes Renzi Look Good…In the Photodrawing!

Rick RenziThanks to TucsonMark, we have a link to this morning’s Wall Street Journal article detailing the allegations against Rick Renzi. Apparently, it involves an alfalfa field near Sierra Vista. What, no buckwheat?

Renzi tried to get Resolution Copper Company, who wanted to sink a new underground mine near Superior, to buy the field in exchange for arranging the land swap. The mining company had been working local officials and even environmental and recreation groups, but Renzi wanted some sort of compensation for the swap.

It gets more complicated than that, of course. Look for Republicans and the press to claim that the rather tangential involvement of Bruce Babbitt makes this a “bipartisan” scandal.

By the way, the Journal story bears a “SUPERIOR, Ariz” byline. When was the last time a Journal story bore that byline? Alexis Tamerón has an odd sense of pride today.

  • Thanks to the Wall Street Journal for covering the federal court beat in Tucson. Federal grand juries have done a number of interesting but locally unreported investigations in Tucson in recent years.

  • Thanks, Ted. Why does it always take a scandal for Supie to get some love?
