Groe Update

Trish GroeThe Arizona Capitol Times reported yesterday that Trish Groe will be taking a leave of absence from her legislative duties to seek treatment for alcoholism.

Monday’s Yellow Sheet featured several bits on Groe’s problems, including an excerpt from this blog (but they called me “Tim”). One “railbird” they talked to questioned why the Arizona Republic “broke” the story about Groe’s arrest in an opinion piece by Laurie Roberts rather than an actual news article. I found this strange myself: the opinion before the story? Apparently, a reporter had the story on Friday, but an editor gave it to Roberts for her piece. It would seem the possibility that a legislator could be charged with a felony would be a bit more newsworthy than that.

  • Has anyone in the media ever gotten your name right when you are not running for office?

Tim: There are some who call me… Tim.

  • *enjoys the King Arthur and the Search For The Holy Grail reference*

  • Why do you suppose that Groe’s case was transferred from La Paz County to Yuma County?

  • Hmmm Zelph…very good question. Such a motion to remove should be public record I would think and had to be signed by a court official.

I don’t know the answer to this question, but does she represent La Paz? If so, there could be a conflict of interest with the elected judges in that county (another reason why we need merit selection in ALL counties) or with the prosecutor or others. It might be to avoid the appearance of impropriety, if for instance, she donated to a judges campaign or that of a county attorney at some point. Maybe a personal relationship–friends…etc.

Either way, it would look and feel “icky” to have her tried in the same county she represents.
