The Nation on Charlton, Renzi and Gag Factor 15
The Nation published a piece yesterday about the firing of Paul Charlton. As with most pieces on this subject, it leaves me with more questions than it answers. It does introduce a heretofore unknown (to me) character, a former US Attorney named Brent Ward. Ward prosecuted many pornography cases and became an ally of Ed Meese, and is now in the justice department. Ward seems to have been the one most dissatisfied with Charlton’s lack of enthusiasm when prosecuting a Scotsdale adult video store.
The article once again points to the seemingly back burnered investigation of Rick Renzi and the author seems to think that Ward’s e-mails could have been used as a pretext to get rid of Charlton and end the Renzi probe. I don’t entirely buy that Charlton’s firing had much to do with the Renzi matter (near as anyone can tell, it is still moving along slowly), but the article raises an interesting group of questions.
By the way, the article seems to have been written before the latest avalanche of e-mails.
