I Blame the Republic…The Roman Republic

I received a missive from an individual who took issue with my post on the rhubarb between David Schapira and Bob Robson. Well, they only took issue with one particular part of it: the fact that I quoted the Arizona Republic’s snarky comments on the incident, and their quote of Robson’s later comments towards Steve Gallardo:

Mr. Gallardo, I don’t suppose you know what truth or fiction is in certain respects.

The writer invited me to look at video of the speech to support his claim that Robson actually said “I don’t suppose to know…” You can look at it yourself, it is titled “House Committee of the Whole #2″ and the exchange is roundabout the 25th minute.

I checked, and Robson did, in fact, say “to” and not “you.” Strike one more against the Arizona Republic. By the way, the debate doesn’t make Robson look good, since he implies on several occasions that he doesn’t know what he is talking about (he seems to do that in the statement in question too), and admits that he wasn’t present durring some important testimony at the committee hearing on the bill that he is debating.

Of course, there could be another explanation. Since I don’t see how things are spelled, Robson could have been saying “tu” instead of “to.” Yes, Robson slipped into Latin (but not into the Spanish “tú,” this was an immigration bill…). So, Robson was saying “you,” just in another language. Further, Robson was using the familiar instead of the formal, which was highly disrespectful of Mr. Gallardo.

Hey, it could have happened. God knows the actual statement doesn’t make a lot of sense either.
