Another Entry in the “What On Earth Is Going On Here?” Department

Check out this letter from Jon Kyl in this morning’s Arizona Republic. Kyl is claiming that he was not “fine” with the firing of US Attorney Paul Charlton. This would be in conflict with earlier e-mails that said that Kyl knew about the firing and had approved it.
Okay, three things could be happening here:
- Kyl is lying.
- Kyl is not the powerful figure that can deliver for Arizona as his campaign ads claimed only a few months ago
- George Bush and/or Alberto Gonzales are so eager to put their cronies in the US Attorney’s office that they are willing to screw high ranking members of their own party (even when they are on the relevant committees).
I dunno. The whole thing is weird.
Oh, by the way, is the reason for Charlton’s firing porn or the death penalty? I am still unclear on that one.

Interesting change of opinion on this one. I think it makes sense. I guess they didn’t think anyone would care when they up and fired a prosecutor that Kyl and McCain both endorsed and that was a great public servant. It is also the case that it is hard to say that he wasn’t a good public servant.
Remember, again, the process for appointing a US District Attorney is the that President consults Senators of the same party as the President in the state that needs a new nominee. They generally go with the person that this (or in our case these) Senators send to the President. Both Kyl and McCain backed Charlton and are only now defending him after he was fired…and only after it starts to look bad on them.
Republicans in this state should be circling their wagons around Charlton, not the President.
He is a “Jon’y Come Lately” but at least he is finally backing the right guy. Any other Republicans as outraged now as Kyl?
