An Indication?
I was wearing this Barack Obama pin yesterday. You get it, O’bama…you see…he’s not Irish, but it’s funny and stuff.
I attended a District 28 Democratic club St. Patrick’s day party, which, for the first time since, I dunno, Lou Brady was chair was actually held on St. Patrick’s day. For the last couple of years, I have worn a Celtic FC jersey, but it has always been too tight on me and is a little itchy. This time, I wore the “O’bama” pin even though I really haven’t made up my mind yet.
Oddly, I didn’t get a great deal of reaction to the pin at the event. I did get a comment from a John Edwards supporter (actually, “supporter” may be too weak a term), and a few people who thought the pin was “cute,” but no, “oh, Obama all the way.”
But, I kept the pin on when I later went to Roller Derby. There I got reaction from nearly a dozen folks, including several of the skaters, that all liked Obama and wanted the pin. These were people I don’t consider “apolitical,” some are actually quite active in local civic and charitable groups, but they are definitely not the sort of crowd that shows up at district meetings or have been politically active.
I don’t know if the reaction would have been that much different if I had worn a pin for Bill Richardson or John Edwards, or heck, Mike Gravel. But it looks like Obama has touched a nerve outside of the normal circle of activists, and has done so very early.

I got the same reaction up here in Phoenix at First Fridays where we were handing out Obama rocks.

Interesting post. You know, Tedski, it seems as though Americans go to some effort when electing a new president to correct the major flaws of the outgoing president. For example, Bill Clinton had a problem with adultery, and that seems to be the one of the few faults that George Bush does not have. Maybe in 2008 Americans will focus on electing an intelligent president and Barack Obama could certainly be a front runner.
