“See These Guys, Not a Henry A. Jaastad Among Them…”

So, Steve Leal opted out of the race.  So, who will jump in now?

Yesterday, Daniel Patterson took the unusual step of posting an announcement on his blog. Patterson had previously floated his name as a replacement for Leal if he had to step down to run for mayor. Patterson has been involved in environmental and neighborhood issues for a long time. He serves on the city Planning Commisssion and he is president of the Santa Rita Park Neighborhood Association.

Patterson has run for office before. As a member of the Green Party, he made a run against then-State Senator Elaine Richardson.

There is also talk about José Ibarra running. He left this possibility open when he announced he was not going to run for re-election to the council, but it was thought that he wouldn’t run against Leal. With Leal out, speculation has again turned to an Ibarra run.

Former councilmember Brent Davis has floated his name before. Like with Ibarra, with Leal’s name so prominent, there was less and less talk of a Davis making a go of it. With Leal out, he may start considering it again. His current day job is as Executive Director of the Southern Arizona chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Davis’s problem is that he would be counting on the support of the buisiness community, which is largely satisfied with current Mayor Bob Walkup’s leadership.
