Grijalva Tidbits…Cositas Really

The National Journal released “liberal” ratings for members of congress. The Journal’s ratings gave our own Raúl Grijalva a 96.2 liberal rating. This puts Grijalva up there as the third most liberal member of congress. What? Only third? Such a sell out.

I joke about that, but give it time, I’ll have an encounter with a self-styled tribune of the progressive movement who will complain that Grijalva isn’t liberal enough and we need to run a candidate against him in the primary to “hold him accountable.” No doubt this person will be wearing a “Kucinich for President” pin. By the way, Dennis Kucinich scored an 87, which puts him at 50th place.

You can check the ratings for the Arizona delegation here. These ratings were compiled from last year’s votes, so Harry Mitchell and Gabrielle Giffords are not included. Also, the numbers are percentiles. This makes John McCain and Jeff Flake look like moderates because the numbers are in comparison to the right wing nitwits who ran congress last session.

Selma MarchThis weekend Grijalva was in Selma with other members of congress to commemorate the march across the Edmund Pettus bridge. I was sent this photo of Grijalva, along with other members of congress and religious leaders assembling before their re-enactment of the march. Other members in the picture include Gwen Moore, James Clyburn, Keith Ellison, Linda Sanchez and John Lewis, who was badly beaten by Alabama state troopers when he tried to cross the bridge decades ago. Former Senator Harris Wofford is in the shot too. As a young campaign aide, Wofford was responsible for convincing John F. Kennedy to make civil rights a priority. The man with the roman collar is Father Clete Kiley, who works for the US Conference of Bishops. You can click the picture to see a bigger version. As I figure out who more of these folks are, I’ll add their names.

  • So World Peace, Big Business out-of-Washington and a real Health Care Plan isn’t liberal enough, huh?

While polls, ratings and TV news guide your vote you may let Kucinich slip through your liberal fingers.

    How sad.
