St. Casimir
Today is the Feast of St. Casimir, patron saint of Poland and Lithuania. Casimir was a pacifist who put serving God above the acquisition of political power. I wrote about him last year on the occasion of his feast day. The only detail worth adding is that Pope Benedict XVI used the eve of Casimir’s feast day to appoint a Casimir, Bishop Kazimierz Nycz, as the new leader of the Catholic Church in Poland.

It is also worth noting that he was prince of Poland, and even served as king while his brother was absent from the throne. He was a man who truly lived his faith, and who used his power only for the good of his people.
