X Marks the Departing Candidate

Nobody but me remembers this, but I was a candidate for Ward 6 city council for a few days in late 2004. I saw that no one had pulled papers to run against Fred Ronstadt, so I went downtown and pulled them myself.  As it turned out, Steve Farley had pulled papers already but for some reason was not recorded as doing so.  Shortly thereafter, another candidate whose name escapes me (he ended up not running) pulled papers too. I sent a letter to the City Clerk stating that I would not be a candidate after all.

When I checked the official candidate’s list, I expected that my name would be accompanied by a legend reading “withdrawn” if it appeared at all.  I was suprised to see that instead my name was on there complete with a big black “x” over it. It was like one of those internet hit lists that whackos put up of judges that they don’t like.

The thickness of the “x” has decreased so it seems less stark now, but we have our first ex- and xed- candidate in our city council race this year: Barrio Anita resident Ramón Olivas.

Accompanied by word that Ray Carroll aide Scott Egan has made it clear to a couple of folks that he will probably not make a go of it after all, it seems strange to already have candidates dropping out when it was only a couple of weeks ago that no one had pulled papers in the race at all.

Geez, guys. At least stay in the race long enough that I can poke fun of you.

  • One of two things must be happening:

    1. They flee in fear of the RRR and it’s rapier-like wit and fear that thier thin skins couldn’t handle the pressure :)

2.. these people have some sort of inside knowledge about the future troubles the city faces and they want no part of it
