What Is Ted Downing Up To?
One may remember that in the closing days of his term, Ted Downing was still at the capitol, requesting “bill folders” in the hopes that, one assumes, he could find someone to carry the resulting bills.
Downing is still being seen at the capitol; some think that he may still be trying to lobby for those bills. More power to him. He’s a citizen that wants to get some things done.
But some at the capitol have complained that he is still acting like he is in the legislature and showing up at legislative events. One e-mailer told me that he edged his was into speaking at an African American day program with other legislators. It leads some to wonder if he is trying to keep his profile up for another run for either the House or Senate in 2008.
(A run against Paula Aboud would make the most sense given the bitterness in that race, but a race for State House would make an intriguing possibility. Would he be trying to take out Steve Farley or the veteran David Bradley who Farley suprisingly outpolled in 2006?)
I’m not sure how much it helps him here in Tucson to be “seen” at the capitol though. To be sure, he’s been doing work on the ground here (he’s a very active member of his Democratic district club and his neighborhood association). But making sure that the folks in Phoenix know you are still around doesn’t get you too many votes in mid-town Tucson. And, as he found out in his last race, helping get bills passed without actually having your name on them doesn’t get you too far either.

You are reading in all sorts of motives. Why not just ask Ted why he is doing what he is doing. From my experience, Ted is an exemplary citizen. About the African American event, he was invited. If you’re going to be a reporter, go to the source. We already have too much hearsay already. Thanks,

Ted Downing, UA prof in Anthropology, is off to Egypt to speak on Human Rights in Arab countries. He has worked for “we the people” people his whole life, and it bothers me to hear such a vicious attack on a decent and hardworking man. His wife Carmen is no intellectual slouch either, BTW.
His friends in the international anthropology and human rights fields are happy to have him back after he spent four years “playing politics” in the AZ legislature. I think the people have lost a wise and humane public servant.
The only reason he wanted to represent us was to get some things done that would benefit the people. It sure wasn’t the paycheck, and after he learned that to really get things done you have to become anonymous, I would venture it wasn’t about public approbation.
Thankfully, Ted still wants to get some things done, and is still the head of the Election Integrity Committee of the Dem Party, and working also on resptoration of voting rights for felons and the insane buildup of incarcerations that leaves no money for higher education.
Great talk last night to Sonora Progressives, helping us to figure out how to influence legislation as citizens.

The scurrilous attacks you repeat here are from the Aboub machine. The robo calls at the end of the campaign were the lowest of the low (even from Aboud who has a the ends justify the means rep)

Ted is a very liberal Dem, I am not.
I grow weary of the Gay, lesbian bisexual trans politicians attacking any one who runs that is not GLBT.
Your attack on Downing was as low as Abouds.

Tom had rant about Ted D months ago same BS as Sandy, about Ted supporting rape. That is a lie spread by robo calls in the midnight hour.
Well Ted ski, no comments about the bad indie comm that pulled this trash, Aboud did not know ??? It is not true about Downing.
I do not mind full contact campaigns, this is way past that. Hell Ted Downing is just to the left of Mao, that is no reason to slime him with this trash

For one thing, Tom has nothing to do with what I post here. For another thing, I did make mention of the robo calls during the campaign. The robo calls don’t have too much to do with what I’m talking about here, and I am confused about how what I am writing is an “attack.”
And, the name is spelled “Aboud.” If you are going to make your own baseless attacks against her, you should learn to spell her name.

Did Ted Downing vote against the spousal rape bill or not?
Its a simple question.
He voted with the rapists over the victims.
simple math people.
His chances to bring up amendments or changes to the bills were there- he just failed to achieve them. Once your done with the amendment process, you then consider the bill as a whole NOT as some sort of technicality.
The voters expect RESULTS and ted failed on all accounts and was thrown out (thank god) on his ass.

Um, I think you have Tom Prezelski confused with a different Tom (Tom-AZ). In fact, I have seen that Tom always posts as Tom Prezelski, and I am pretty sure he doesn’t have a blogger ID, so I think you owe Tom Prezelski an apolgy.

First off, I am not Tom prezelski. I am Sandy. Im a retired school administrator and a proud progressive democrat. I am against funding the war and along that thought line I am against spousal rape.
Something Ted Downing is not against. apparently by his vote.
I will admit right now that when i saw that sole democrat name on the roster of the “nays” i started crying. I can expect it from such apes like the GOP but not from our side! I saw Republican members of the state legislature just laughing during the committee hearings and insinuating that its part of a “marital compact” or a “wife’s duty” and TED DOWNING stood with those Apes and forever Ted Downing is a traitor to all democratic principles as far as I am concerned.
