Polish-Mexican Candidate Secures UFW Endorsement

Phoenix city council candidate Michael Nowakowski announced that he secured the endorsement of the United Farm Workers, but also members of César Chávez’s family.

Some Nowakowski supporters point out that his opponent, Laura Pastor, may have made her announcement at César Chávez Plaza, but Nowakowski got the endorsement. Can’t we all just get along here?

Michael Nowakowski and Cesar ChavezWhat I want to know is, where is Nowakowski’s love for Polonia? I want to see the pictures of him at the Gdansk shipyards with Lech.

Getting the UFW endorsement is worth some moral points; they represent the most important struggle in the chicano community over the last 40 years. I don’t know what it actually represents in terms of feet on the street. Despite Chávez being born here and the fact that he died here, the UFW’s membership in Arizona is rather small. Alfredo Gutierrez had their endorsement when he ran for Governor, and he was defeated even in Hispanic areas. An important thing is whether or not this leads to other labor endorsements for Nowakowski (he’s already got the firefighters), or if Pastor’s connections lead her to win them.
