The Glassman More Than Half-Full
Clarence Boykins is still being talked about as a candidate in Ward 2, but it seems that the ever eager Rodney Glassman has out maneuvered him in the early part of this race.
Last Thursday, Glassman turned in enough contributions to qualify for city matching funds. Long time City Clerk Kathleen Deitrick says that it’s the quickest she’s seen a candidate qualify. Glassman has been collecting lots of smaller contributions, which has enabled him to reach out to more people early on and made it easier to enlist others in his effort. He also has a pretty massive base of people to go to from his work with Raúl Grijalva and his charity work. (If you’d like to contribute, you can visit this page on his website.)
He’s been able to assemble a pretty impressive list of supporters that includes folks on the leftish side of the Democratic party like Keith Bagwell and Molly McKasson all the way over to Republicans like Jack Kamper and former University of Arizona President Peter Likins. His list also includes Boykins’s old boss Silvy Edmonds-Cotton, who has been collecting contributions for Glassman. Gabrielle Giffords, Patty Weiss and Jeff Latas, the three top finishers in last year’s CD 8 primary, are listed as supporter’s as well.
Boykins is still listed on the City Clerk’s site as pulling a packet, but not as taking the next step of putting an organization together. As I learned the hard way in 2006, when you are running against someone who starts early, it can be really hard to put together anything when your opponent has locked down so many supporters.
NB - Local public access producer Robert Reus has also taken out a candidate packet, but hasn’t taken any other action. He’s issue is changing the charter so we can have a strong mayor form of government.
Public access? Heck, even we bloggers are allowed to make fun of those guys.
