Ward One No One

Jose IbarraStill, no candidates have pulled packets to run in Ward One, including incumbent Councilmember José Ibarra.  All of this just leads to speculation; many folks are wondering if Ibarra is thinking of running at all.  There has even been speculation that he may run for mayor, something he talked about doing years ago.

(Unlike Steve Leal, Ibarra would not have to resign to run because his term is up at the end of this year.)

The talk is that Regina Romero, currently an aide to Karin Uhlich, may run for the office. This, as Jim Nintzel pointed out last week, shows what complicated relationships we have in local politics here. Romero’s husband, Ruben Reyes, works for Congressman Raúl Grijalva, and Ibarra cut his political teeth on Grijalva’s campaigns for county supervisor as well as serving as an aide to him. But also, the fact that an aide to one council member is being talked about as a candidate against another one can create a strange situation, as Nintzel said in last week’s Skinny:

Gee, that should make for smooth relations between Ward 1 and Ward 3 at the weekly study sessions.

Many of us are checking the City Clerk’s candidate list on an obsessive basis. The moment anyone pulls a packet, even if it’s The Pennyman or Jim Anderson, you’ll see it here first.
