Republicans Don’t Seem to be Liddy About ‘08
Here is a question for some of my Republican posters: why hasn’t Senator Elizabeth Dole been mentioned as a candidate for 2008?
I ask this because I remember her being mentioned over and over again as a running mate in the late 80’s and 90’s, even when her husband still harbored presidential ambitions. She did try to run on her own in 2000, but she had a hard time competing for campaign money with George W. Bush and John McCain and dropped out before the first primary.
All of this happened before she was even elected to public office. Now, she’s actually got some experience as a Senator. You would think she’d at least be mentioned as a possible candidate just because pundits like to include a woman’s name or two, but I think I’ve even heard Kay Bailey Hutchison’s name more (and I’ve only heard her name once or twice).
So, what is up with that?

I like Liddy, probably more than a lot of other Republicans, but just being a woman isn’t enough to make one “anointed” (for either party.) She was given a stage to show what she could do with the Senate Candidate recruitment this year, and by all accounts fell flat. Had she shined in this role, there might have been a bigger wind behind her for the nomination this year.
If there has to be women mentioned “just for balance,” (which is silly, by the way) most of that oxygen is probably being sucked up by Secretary Rice. I don’t think that she will ultimately run, but I bet there will be hard consideration for her to join the ticket as a VP candidate.

By the way, do you like how they airbrushed the picture of Hillary, and dredged out the worst possible picture of Liddy for that Time cover? Ten years ago, and even today, Liddy is far more attractive than Hillary, and it wasn’t even close.

If “Liddy” ever entertained the thought that she might run for president, she probably should not have let Bob do all those ridiculous Viagra commercials especially the one with the Golden retriever. I think that once you start selling your name like that you are pretty much saying, “I’m done.” I think that most people still associate the presidency with a dignified presentation of oneself and one’s spouse. I could be wrong…..
