District 10: Rumors That Might Be Too Good to Be True

The talk out on the streets is that Speaker Jim Weiers’s reelection effort is in trouble.

The rumor is, and I must say I haven’t confirmed this, that a Republican internal poll shows Weiers running in third behind Rep. Doug Quelland and Democratic challenger Jackie Thrasher (The Democrats haven’t polled in the District in months). There has also apparently been disatisfaction with the quality of Weiers’s mailers, which included one with prominent Democratic endorsements.

If this plays out it would be stunning. Should Weiers be defeated, he would be the first sitting speaker to lose a re-election since Joe Lane lost a Republican primary in the old District 8 (Cochise and Graham Counties) back in 1988. It should be said it took a major event to prompt this, Lane’s loss was tied to the impeachment of Evan Mecham.

NB - Yes, before you write me, I know that Jeff Groscost was a sitting speaker, but he wasn’t running for re-election, he was running for State Senate.

  • I have been saying all along that the enthusiasm of Democratic voters, paired with the anger of independents against Republicans (if leveraged) could dip deeply and far down the ballot to State House and Senate races.

This is THE opportunity to pick up seats in the state legislature. Kill the rhetoric about “protecting from a veto proof majority” and start talking about winning.

Great post and great info. Ted.

  • “Speaker Lopes”

I like the sound of that.

  • so i guess the phil gordon endorsment of the predatory lender *cough* loan shark in chief doesnt care much weight anymore?

  • Totally agree with kralmajales…we should be talking in terms of winning control, not preventing veto-proof majorities.

  • It’s Republican women! They have been overwhelmingly positive to Jackie’s message. Now we just need to turnout our base and she wins.
