Well, I Guess You Can Admire Their Stones

I love our Democratic elected officials that shun the party and endorse Republicans when it becomes convienient, but want to bathe in the reflected glow of a popular political celebrity when they come along.

One of the many R-Cubed correspondents reported to me that Leah Landrum-Taylor and Phil Gordon showed up to the Get-Out-The-Vote Rally that featured earlier this week. Both Landrum-Taylor and Gordon have their faces pictured on a piece endorsing Republican Speaker Jim Weiers. This didn’t make them too popular with the Democratic party, which organized the event.

I’m not saying that neither one should have been able to attend, although it’s pretty silly to ask people to cross party lines when it suits you, then show up to a partisan event in the hopes for a good photo-op a week later. Despite the problems that Landrum-Taylor’s endorsement of Weiers has caused for the party’s hopes of blocking a 2/3 majority for the Republicans, she chose to sit on the dais while Obama spoke about the need to get out and vote for Democrats.

And people wonder why we lose elections.

  • Mayor Phil Gordon (who I like to call Fairweather Phil) endorsed Republican Weiers in 2006, he endorsed Republican Andy Thomas in 2004.

    Who is next, Ron Gould?

Phil Gordon has endorsed two of the most blatantly racist candidates in the past two years … why??

Don’t forget, he already has endorsed John McCain for President in 2008, and was rumored to be getting his staff ready early this summer to come out and strike a major blow agaist prop 107 opponents (until it was leaked on this blog).

Also - why hasn’t he been as eager to endorse Democratic Candidates? I haven’t looked this up - but are there any current Democrats running for office (especially in races that share his constiuents) that he has NOT endorsed - or only endorsed AFTER Wieirs?

I don’t know the answer to either of those questions - but I think you know what I’m getting at. I will say this though - if Fairweather Phil thinks that Democratic Activists don’t have a long memory about these types of slaps in the face during partisan primaries - then maybe he should call up Ted Downing and ask him to share a Starbucks with him.

If Gordon runs for higher office and faces a primary opponent - you can add me to a list of people who will vocally stand in opposition to his candidacy.

Is it a bad idea to say this out loud? Does it make me a disloyal Democrat? I say HELL NO. Gordon’s people calling ME a disloyal Democrat for calling him out for his selective “bi-partisanship” is like President Bush calling John Kerry a draft dodger.

Remember this is a guy who is so eager to play both sides that he attempts to protray a crafted though visibly SLIMY and disengenuouss image of “partisan cooperation” by displaying a portrait of both Bush AND Clinton in his office. This wouldn’t bother me in the least, if it wasn’t so transparently done on purpose to create some image.

I wonder - with Bush in the low 40s in AZ, think Phil took that portrait down? Free beer (or soda) to whoever finds out first.

Ugh, this guy makes my skin crawl.

  • Agreed. Gordon’s actions within the past few weeks, esp. with the Weiers endorsement, just reek of political opportunism.

If the Repubs gain the veto-proof majority, i doubt any Democrat that’s paying attention will let Phil Gordon forget this.

  • Do you people really think Phil is thinking that far ahead or is he just doing the best he can to ensure positive treatment for his city with a state legislature that is increasingly hostile (espeically when it comes to tax revenues) to municipalities and their interests?

  • Bored -

If that is the case, then why hasn’t he endorsed others? Where is he on the Senate leadership? County Board of Supervisors?

That isn’t what this is about … why would he endorse ANDY THOMAS in 2004 with your logic?

  • Because he was mesmerized by the mustache.

  • Bored,

Ever wonder why he endorsed Pederson when he did??? AFTER the whole Wieiers thing?

    We call that political cover.
