Quote of the Week, No, Decade

Local music demigod Al Perry, upon hearing that the legislature is not only trying to get rid of clean elections, but trying to roll back campaign finance laws to pre-1988 standards:

You know, it’s a new f***ing outrage every day. After a year, that’s 365 f***ing outrages.

By the way, Al was totally unengaged with politics until Bush came along.

  • ” Al was totally unengaged with politics until Bush came along.”

That seems to be true of a lot of people.

I suppose that means that, for all his myriad faults, even W can accomplish some good. Even if it is by accident.

  • I was totally unengaged until Howard Dean.

  • I was totally unengaged until the day after Election Day 2004. But, better late than never.

  • Campaign trail 2000, when the then future president opened his mouth for the first time.

  • Since we are telling stories…(grin)…I have been engaged in politics since I walked to grade school one chilly morning in West Virginia only to find that the school was cancelled for election day. My parents didn’t follow politics and thought it was a school day. I saw interesting people, bright signs, and people talking about how to improve the state, the schools, and our county. I was quickly put to work holding signs and talking to candidate backers…it was amazing seeing democracy that way.

Because I was a rebel and the state was totally dominated by some rather corrupt Democrats, I became a Republican (smile)…then in college I realized I liked freedom and became a liberatarian…then when Bush came along, I saw religious freedom being torn apart, that tax cuts simply meant for people who made money already, and that they really didn’t want business out of govt. at all…they wanted government to help business. I also began to see that the free market was bullshit. I saw that the small fraction of the money spent on business, wars, and defense, could go so much farther if it was used to help even a few people get education and access to society. Finally, Bush sent my brother to war and my father had to seek work in Iraq because there were no jobs in industrial construction here.

While I am leaning more and more to becoming a Democrat, I am now registered as an independent. Its actually kind of liberating. We don’t get invited to parties and socials like party members do, but there is a lot of freedom in being one too. You can believe what you want, don’t have to worry about the party line, or backing party politicians who are corrupt in order to hold onto power, and both parties want your vote badly…we get a LOT of mail.

    Best,

    Roger
